An exhibition exploring community memory and the role of women through ASEAN textile traditions is being held in Busan, Republic of Korea. The KF ASEAN Culture House presents the special exhibition Weaving Hands, Women’s Time: Textile Traditions in ASEAN from March 25 to August 30, 2026.
Shaped by diverse geographies and historical contexts, the textile traditions of the eleven ASEAN countries have developed distinct identities. Across the region—from the mountainous areas of Viet Nam to the coasts of Timor Leste—textiles function not merely as everyday objects but as cultural expressions that weave together community worldviews and social relationships.
The exhibition examines the depth of ASEAN weaving traditions through the full process, from fiber gathering and spinning to dyeing and weaving. It features a range of traditions, including Cambodia’s krama, Timor-Leste’s tais, Malaysia’s songket, Lao PDR’s Naga motif textiles, and the
Philippines’ piña weaving. It also highlights batik and kebaya traditions, illustrating how colors, patterns, and dress cultures have been shared and transmitted across borders, forming a common cultural heritage in Southeast Asia. Particular attention is given to the role of women, who have long been at the center of these traditions.
Through the skilled practices of spinning and pattern making, women have not only sustained daily life but also transmitted techniques and aesthetic knowledge across generations. The interlacing of warp and weft represents more than a process of production; it serves as a foundation for preserving collective memory and cultural identity.
This exhibition presents ASEAN textile traditions as a living contemporary culture, offering an opportunity to reconsider how heritage is sustained and carried forward into the future.
